Peterson Power Helps The Department Of Administrative Services

The Department of Administrative Services (DAS) implements the governor and legislature’s political decisions while ensuring the productive use of tax dollars. To hold the information necessary for DAS to properly function, the department maintains a small data center that is cooled by primary and backup cooling systems. In the spring of 2016, the main chiller failed, and the DAS staff had to take immediate action to prevent overheating of the data center. If the center were to shut down, it could have resulted in a shutdown of computing services for all state offices including the Department of Revenue, Department of Transportation, Department of Education, and the Department of Health.

The state called Peterson Power Systems at 5 pm on Friday, May 13, 2016, and required an immediate turnkey proposal that included rental of a new unit, labor and installation costs of the new unit, removal of the old unit, and transportation of equipment and supplies to the facility. Peterson was able to meet the needs of the DAS and installed a replacement chiller three days after the original phone call. Installing the new system wasn’t easy, and became increasingly difficult because of the limited space available for the chiller and generator. The facility also lacked sufficient power for the chiller, which Peterson addressed by supplying an XQ800 generator to support the chiller unit. To speed the installation of the generator and ensure that all parties were on the same page, PPSI’s Cliff Kinnaman, Rental Sales Representative, worked with the DAS’s own electrician team on the layout and connection of cables running from the generator to the chiller.

Due to the hard work of the Peterson Power team, the Department of Administrative Services was able to maintain operation of their entire data center, and Peterson even provided a temporary backup cooling system to our rental chiller just in case the primary unit were to stop functioning. The state chose Peterson Power because of Cliff’s earlier legwork making a cold call in April of 2013. This isn’t our first time working with the state, and regardless of the scale of the project, we are always looking to deliver Customer First service to them and the rest of our loyal customers. We are thankful that agencies, both government and private, know that they can make one phone call and have their power generation, compressed air, and temperature control needs met.
