D.O.T. Class 6 Poisons range from Anthrax to Zinc Cyanide. They can be inhaled, ingested, injected or absorbed through the skin. Poisons come in solid, liquid and gas forms, and they are very common in commercial transportation. So what do you know about poisons? Ask yourself these questions. Can a responder become contaminated without being exposed at an incident? What is the difference between Division 6.1 and 6.2? How much exposure is allowable? Explain the differences in zone A, B or C? And what is an L-D 50 rating? Easy answers, if you have had the proper training. The ability to be effective at an incident involving hazardous materials comes from knowledge. Knowledge comes from experience and training. If you don’t have hazardous materials incident experience, all you can rely on is training.
