The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, made up of the fifty states, Canadian provinces and Mexico, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration Office of Motor Carriers have developed a uniform inspection procedure known as the North American Standard. Studies show that routine safety inspections have increased the number of safe miles driven on our highways. The North American Standard is designed to be a quick but thorough inspection of the driver and vehicle. The inspection concentrates on the driver, his fatigue level, the trip documents, and the vehicle’s mechanical elements, with an emphasis on the critical components.
