Diesel generator sets

Prime, Continuous or Standby Power

Selecting the right diesel generator set for your application depends on your power needs. Prime power generation provides the main source of power and is designed to operate for extended periods of time at variable load. Standby power generators are often used in emergency situations and are installed to protect businesses from the consequences of loss of primary electric power supply. Continuous prime power is very similar to prime power generation but has a base load rating; these generators supply power continuously for a constant load and are not equipped to handle variable loads or overload conditions.

Switchgear

Switchgear is the apparatus used to switch, control and protect electrical circuits and equipment. The most common use of switchgear is to de-energize equipment and clear faults downstream. Switchgear is also used for isolation of circuits from power supplies, and to enhance system availability by allowing more than one source to feed a load.

A switchgear has two types of components:

  • Switching and protecting devices, switches, fuses, isolators, circuit breakers and lighting arrestors. These components conduct or interrupt the flow of electrical power.
  • Control systems: control panels, current or potential transformers, protective relays and associated circuity. These components control and protect the power conducting components.

Switchgear standards

Ratings, design, specifications and details of switchgear are governed by a multitude of standards. In North America, IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and ANSI (American National Standards Institute) standards are generally used.

Comcast Denver - EMCP4.4 Master Control Panel

  • The product provides a single master location from which an operator can view status and control the generators
  • Three 2000kW gensets paralleled to a common bus with electrically operated main breakers
  • EMCP4.4 control panels and EMCP 4.4 MCP for remote location monitoring and control
  • Paralleling switchboard with a common bus for the input and feeder breakers for the output

SFO Terminal 3 - EPIC

  • The product provides a means of controlling and paralleling a variety of generators that might be of different sizes or brands
  • Two 750kW gensets: one existing generator that was upgraded to have an electrically operated breaker and one new generator that was factory equipped with an electrically operated breaker
  • The two generators closed their respective breakers to a common bus that was provided by others to provide load as a single source to the facility
  • Load shed and load add controls were included to properly load and unload the system

San Jose Regional Wastewater Facility - Cat Custom Switchgear

  • Complex project adding four 3000kW emergency standby generators with closed transition paralleling to an existing ring bus of the plant that uses a combination of utility power and prime power cogen

Automatic Transfer Switches

An automatic transfer switches (ATS) is an integral part of a generator set: it transfers power from one source, the utility, to another, the generator. An ATS triggers when it senses that one of the sources has lost or gained power. An ATS is often installed in conjunction with one or more backup generators to make sure that the generator(s) provide electrical power if the utility source fails. Today every standby generator set that is sold requires at least one ATS, and some cases, multiple units.

Maintenance for ATS Products

Good maintenance programs involve all components of a generator, including the ATS. There are several reasons for regular maintenance. In some industries, it is mandatory to perform, at the minimum, a weekly load test. This basic test makes sure the ATS is capable of sending a start signal to the generator and transferring the building load onto the generator for a period of time set by the user. This simple operation ensures the basic functionality of the ATS and generator. However, it does not address other critical operations during the life of the switch.

Early Detection of Problems – Maintenance contract

A preventive maintenance contract can help identify problems before a failure occurs. Consider, for example, power cables, contactor assemblies and interconnected wires. During a genset’s initial installation, start-up, and commissioning, particular attention is given to these components’ integrity. However, after a period of time, these components can deteriorate, vibrate loose, or become contaminated. Without regular maintenance, failure could occur, causing extensive damage to the ATS, generator, or downstream devices. This type of failure (and resulting costs) can be prevented if the switch is under a maintenance contract.

A maintenance contract should include, but not be limited to, the factory recommendations for testing and maintenance. These basic services will ensure high reliability and prolong the life of your ATS.
