Shop Technician
Where you'll work
Peterson operates 21 full-service repair facilities in California, Oregon, and Washington. We maintain varying levels of Power Systems staffing at these stores, with dozens of mechanics at our flagship locations (San Leandro, CA and Hillsboro, OR).
Peterson’s facilities vary in size based on our customers’ local needs; but are uniformly well-supplied with the latest tooling and technology required to service and repair modern power generation gear and related accessories.
What you'll do
Power Shop Technicians perform repairs to power generation and marine engines in Peterson’s modern, well-equipped service facilities. These technicians perform the following service operations with occasional supervision:
- Pre-delivery setup, installation, and start-up on all makes and models of Caterpillar engines, generators (primarily in marine applications), and related products.
- Level 1 and Level 2 generator system service.
- Repair, replace or rebuild engines and related systems and components – Cat and Non-Cat products in Industrial, Marine, and EPG applications.
- Assist electric power field technicians, as required.
- Write service reports that accurately document activities.
- Prepare required documentation including work orders, parts lists, and timecards in an accurate and timely manner to enable other employees to do their job in a timely manner.
Field Technician
Where you'll work
Peterson’s 100,000+ square mile Cat service and sales territory includes major US cities like San Francisco, rural towns, ample farmland, and national forests. Our Power Systems technicians see it all. We routinely dispatch service vehicles to remote locations as well as big cities. No two days are the same.
Our field technicians operate late-model, low-miles service trucks outfitted with modern, high-quality tooling and accessories to fully support our customers in remote or isolated settings. Because safety is a high priority at Peterson, we provide whatever gear and supplies are needed to work without injury at any setting.
What you'll do
Power Field Technicians perform repairs to power generation and marine engines in the field as customer needs dictate. These technicians perform the following service operations with occasional supervision:

Mission Critical Technician
Where you'll work
Peterson’s Mission Critical team provides startup and commissioning support to major data center projects all over the United States. As of this writing, we are currently working in the following US states:

By joining the Mission Critical team, you’ll travel up to 100% of the time to locations determined by our customers’ constantly changing needs in this fast-paced, growing business.
What you'll do
The Data Center EPG Traveling Technician performs installation and commissioning to Electrical Power Generation (EPG) equipment at designated customer locations throughout the United States. These technicians perform the following service operations with occasional supervision:
- Follow manufacturer and company service guidelines and procedures to ensure quality work.
- Analyze and diagnose equipment malfunctions.
- Preserve component failure information for accurate failure analysis.
- Perform pre-delivery setup, installation, and start-up on all makes and models of Caterpillar engines, generators, and related products.
- Repair, replace, and rebuild engines and related systems and components of Cat and Non-Cat products in Industrial and EPG applications.
- Perform inspections on equipment as needed.
- Write service reports that accurately document activities.
- Prepare required documentation including work orders, parts lists, and timecards in an accurate and timely manner to enable other employees to do their job in a timely manner.
Who we are looking for
We're looking for people with at least five years of experience who want to get better at this trade for the rest of their career — and for people with enough experience to help bring up the next generation of techs.
Peterson University is authorized by Caterpillar to train and certify technicians. Other Cat dealers send their technicians to us for training. Join our team, and training doesn't stop at onboarding. It makes you better every year you're in this trade.

Technician Qualifications
Associates degree or vocational certificate in Diesel Technology or closely related field; and a minimum of 5 years of directly related experience in power generation or engine service, preferably in a heavy industrial environment; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Mission critical technician applicants must have the ability to travel 100% of the time.

Our need for skilled, qualified technicians is immediate and ongoing.
You can get started very quickly after providing notice to your current employer.
Our onboarding process includes multi-round interviews, a standard background check, and drug-screening to comply with Federal policy (Peterson is a Federal contractor).
It generally takes about a month from application to orientation.
