A CHANGING LANDSCAPE

FLEXIBILITY REQUIRED

With increasing solar and wind energy contributions to the grid—and as the electric-generating sector continues to de-carbonize—power grids are becoming more unpredictable and difficult to manage. While energy storage has potential to help, dispatchable and highly flexible resources will be needed for the foreseeable future to address resiliency challenges. These flexible resources will also need to be able to run for long periods of time in an environmentally responsible manner to address the duration issues that today’s energy-storage technologies are not yet capable of addressing. Historically, these peaking, firming, and intermediate needs have been met by peaking gas turbines. However, as grid intermittency increases, flexible natural gas resources will need to be dispatched multiple times per day—a use-case ideally suited for today’s modern, highly efficient Cat reciprocating engines.

Flexible Attributes

Ramping Capabilities

Cat power plants have extremely fast ramp rates, both up and down, and are ideally suited to help Load Serving Entities with the increasing load following challenges being introduced by intermittent renewable resources.

Minimum Load: Modern Cat reciprocating engine plants offer sustainable and environmentally compliant minimum loads of just a few MWs.

Start Times: Cat power plants can start in two to three minutes, compared to gas turbine plants that take ten minutes or more. Our hybrid technology offers virtually instantaneous response to a dispatch.

Startup Costs

Each time a gas turbine power plant starts, it experiences considerable wear-and-tear, not to mention the fuel consumption that doesn't contribute to electricity production. Cat reciprocating engine plants are designed for frequent starts without the detrimental effects to maintenance cycles. Because they start fast, Cat plants have a smaller carbon footprint than traditional utility-peaking plants.

Fuels Flexibility

Cat natural gas engines can be configured to accommodate diverse fuels, including biofuels and renewable natural gas.

Fast Construction Cycles

Modern Cat reciprocating engine plants incorporate modularized and optimized standard designs allowing them to be built significantly faster than conventional gas turbine peaking plants.

Peterson Power Systems is one of the leading suppliers of power generation equipment to the data center industry. The speed to market mandated by this sector has significantly shortened our project delivery times. The speed at which we can deliver a project gives us a significant advantage over more traditional power generation equipment and services providers.

Environmental Leadership & Social Responsibility

Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Award

The Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Award (GEELA) is California’s highest environmental honor. The award honors individuals, organizations, and businesses that have demonstrated exceptional leadership and made notable, voluntary contributions in conserving California’s precious resources, protecting and enhancing our environment, building public-private partnerships and strengthening the state’s economy.

Bay Area Green Business Award

Bay Area Green Businesses comply with all applicable environmental regulations and have successfully implemented additional green measures selected from the Green Business checklist pertinent to their industry. Green Business practices include:

  • Water Conservation
  • Energy Conservation
  • Solid Waste Reduction and Recycling
  • Pollution Prevention
  • Carbon Footprint (Greenhouse Gas Emissions) Reduction

WRAP – Waste Reduction

The Waste Reduction Awards Program (WRAP) recognizes California businesses that have made outstanding efforts to reduce nonhazardous waste and send less garbage to our landfills. "WRAP of the Year" recognized the best examples of these efforts from 1996-2007, which serve as waste management models to the rest of their industry.

Additional Awards:

  • P2 Model Shop Award – Pollution Prevention
  • Cat Five Star Contamination Control
  • Trash Busters – Waste Reduction State of Oregon
